Seongsu in a Day: What's Actually Open and What to Skip

The fastest-growing neighbourhood in Seoul, the exits that matter, and the two things almost every guide gets wrong about it.

By Sunday Morning

Why everyone is suddenly here

In the first half of 2026, Seongsu had the largest increase in adult-fare boardings of any station on Seoul Metro’s own network — up 1,459,282 to 8,902,747, a rise of 19.6%. Foreign riders using single-journey tickets bought in English, Chinese or Japanese were up 36.9%. Riders under 13 were up 73.5%.

That is a neighbourhood in the middle of becoming something. It is also, as of this year, a neighbourhood the Korean press has started asking whether it is losing itself. Both of those are covered below.

Get off at the right exit, on the right train

Seongsu Station is on Line 2. CJ Olive Young won the co-naming rights in 2024 but returned them within months, and Musinsa took them instead for ₩329,292,929, with the co-name in service since 10 December 2025. Signs and announcements now read 성수(무신사)역.

Watch which train you board. Seongsu is where the Line 2 branch to Sinseol-dong splits off from the main circle line. The platform has four tracks, and it is genuinely easy to get on the wrong one.

The station has four exits and only two of them are useful to you.

  • Exits 1 and 2 serve an apartment complex. Not your side.
  • Exit 3 is the café and pop-up side. Seongsu Yeonbang is 337 metres away, and Yeonmujang-gil, the main street, runs from here.
  • Exit 4 brings you out at Olive Young N Seongsu.

For Seoul Forest instead, use Seoul Forest Station on the Suin-Bundang Line, Exits 3 or 4, about 242 metres from the park. Ttukseom Station on Line 2, Exit 8, is 537 metres.

When to go, which matters more than what you do

Here is a fact that answers the question better than any opinion could.

Yeonmujang-gil is closed to traffic every weekend from 14:00 to 18:00, from 28 March to 29 November 2026, under Seongdong-gu's pedestrian safety scheme. In 2025 the closure ran 13:00 to 17:00. The district moved it an hour later this year to match where the footfall peak had shifted.

So the local government has effectively published the busiest hours in Seongsu: mid-afternoon, Saturday and Sunday. Go on a weekday morning instead.

The other reason to avoid the peak is the station itself. Four exits serve around 80,000 passengers a day. Seoul Metro has approved a new 2.2-metre staircase beside the escalator at Exit 3, the busiest one, with a ₩1.9 billion budget.

Daelim Changgo is the one to start with if you only do one. It is a fifty-year-old warehouse that now holds both a café and, since September 2024, a Musinsa store, with the gabled roof, red brick and steel columns kept.

Musinsa Megastore Seongsu opened on 24 April 2026 and is the largest single fashion and beauty store in Korea: roughly 6,600 square metres across five levels, around 1,000 brands, with 700 beauty brands on the second floor alone. It took about 42,000 visitors on its first day and roughly ₩900 million over its first three days.

Olive Young N Seongsu opened on 22 November 2024 as the chain's flagship innovation store — five floors, nine times the size of the old Myeongdong branch, with skin diagnostics, makeup lessons and multilingual staff. Its revenue was up 30% year on year in the first quarter of 2026. Expect a queue at weekends.

What to skip

Common Ground is not in Seongsu. This is the single most common error in English guides to this neighbourhood. The blue shipping-container mall is at 200 Achasan-ro in Gwangjin-gu, by Konkuk University, and it is open 11:00 to 22:00. It is a perfectly good stop. It is just not part of a Seongsu walking day, and if you have planned it as one you will lose forty minutes finding that out.

Do not build the day around a specific pop-up unless you have already booked it. See below.

How pop-ups actually work here

Pop-ups are the reason a lot of people come, and they run on rules that are not obvious.

Seongdong-gu hosted 468 pop-up locations in the first half of 2026, up 8.8% on 430 a year earlier. That is roughly 78 a month across the district.

But the core street is thinning. Yeonmujang-gil's own pop-up count fell from 233 to 196 over the same period, and Seongdong-gu's share of all Seoul pop-ups dropped from 34.9% to 26.0% while Mapo-gu went from 133 to 225 and Yongsan-gu from 66 to 165.

Most pop-ups require a Naver reservation. A typical run works like this: booking opens on Naver at a set time weeks ahead; the pop-up runs for one to four weeks with no rest days; entry is in hourly slots, around nine a day; you can queue from twenty minutes before your slot; and your booking is cancelled if you have not entered within ten minutes of it. One booker can bring up to five people.

They are found through brand Instagram accounts and through Korean aggregator sites rather than any single listing. Schedules are rarely confirmed more than two or three weeks out, which is why we have not named any current ones here.

For scale: in September 2025, when Seongsu recorded 1.4 million monthly visitors, foreigners were 41.6% of pop-up visitors.

The part the guides leave out

Seongsu was a light-industry district before it was this, and some of it is still here, on the same rents.

The handmade shoe trade has gone from around 500 businesses in early 2018 to 223 in the last quarter of 2025. Craftspeople on those streets pay hotspot rents against cold-spot footfall. Rents across the area were up 14% year on year in the second quarter of 2026, with vacancy at 3.4%.

This is not a reason to stay away. It is a reason to spend some of your money on the ground floor workshops rather than only in the flagship stores, and to understand what you are looking at when a warehouse has been beautifully converted.
