Euljiro at Night: Where to Go and What to Skip

By day Euljiro sells drill bits, paper and packaging. The shutters come down in the evening, and that is when it is worth the trip.

By Sunday Morning

The short answer

Go in the evening, not the afternoon, and not for the shops. Arrive at Euljiro 3-ga station around dusk, walk the side streets while the last workshops close, spend the evening in Nogari Alley, and finish along Cheonggyecheon while the stream is lit.

Euljiro, in Jung-gu, is a working district of hardware shops, printers and packaging wholesalers that turns into a drinking street after dark. A 2020 article on Seoul's news site explains the nickname Hipjiro as hip plus the jiro of Euljiro. The workshops are still there, which is exactly why timing matters.

Why it has to be night

In daylight most of what you see is trade: shutters open on hardware, paper and machine parts, and people moving stock on hand trolleys. Visit Seoul's own English guide to the area describes the change plainly: by evening the hardware shops roll down their shutters. That page carries no date, and we found no official list of closing times, so we will not give you one.

What we can give you is the closing time of the places that publish one. Sewoon Plaza, the electronics arcade on the Cheonggyecheon side, is open 09:00 to 19:00 and closed on Sundays and public holidays, according to Visit Seoul's Korean listing revised on 16 October 2026; it adds that hours differ by shop. Bangsan Market, the packaging and baking supplies market by Euljiro 4-ga, runs 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays, and closes on Sundays, Seollal and Chuseok, per a June 2026 listing. Jungbu Market, the dried fish market further east, lists 04:00 to 19:00, with closing days that vary by shop.

Skip Sunday for the daytime half. Sewoon and Bangsan are both shut. If Sunday evening is your only chance, come for the alley and the stream and leave the arcades out.

Before dark

If you want one daytime stop, make it Sewoon Plaza before 19:00. Visit Seoul gives its address as 159 Cheonggyecheon-ro, 280 m from Exit 12 of Jongno 3-ga station. It is changing: Seoul confirmed plans in December 2024 to remove the raised walkway that links Sewoon to the arcades running south, and Herald Business reported a schedule that began with a 287 m section from May 2026, the rest to follow in stages. We found no report that work has started, so go expecting the deck to be there, and do not be surprised if part of it is fenced off.

Near Sewoon is the Sewoon 4 redevelopment site, the one in the news over a tower planned beside Jongmyo Shrine. On 30 October 2026 SBS Biz reported that the national heritage service had again deferred its review of how to preserve buried heritage on the site, and construction cannot start until that review is finished. There is nothing to visit; in June 2026 it was reported as an idle, gated plot.

The rainy-day route. An underground walkway runs beneath Euljiro from City Hall through Euljiro 1-ga, 3-ga and 4-ga to Dongdaemun History and Culture Park, five stations and 2.8 km, according to Seoul's news site in 2021. That source is older than 2025. It is a way to cross the district dry, not a sight.

Nogari Alley

This is why you came. Nogari is dried young pollack, eaten with draft beer, and Nogari Alley is a cluster of beer halls a short walk from Euljiro 3-ga station: Visit Seoul gives Exit 3, 86 m on foot. Seoul designated the alley a Seoul Future Heritage site in 2015.

The scene is the tables. Jung-gu permits the alley's bars to put tables out on the street at set hours, an exception reported in 2022, and a reporter that July watched it fill from about 6 pm. A Seoul city article in August 2026 still describes the outdoor tables. What we could not find is any official word on whether they stay out through the winter, so in November take a coat and expect some of the evening to be indoors.

One name you may have read about: Euljiro OB Bear, the beer hall at the centre of the alley's best-known dispute, was evicted in April 2022 after repeated enforcement attempts. Reports since then disagree about where it is now, so we have left it out of the route.

Skip looking for Euljiro Myeonok here. The cold noodle restaurant closed on Euljiro in June 2022 and reopened in April 2024 in Nakwon-dong, Jongno-gu, near Jongno 3-ga station. If you want it, it fits better into a night alone in Jongno.

After the alley

Walk north to Cheonggyecheon. The stream path is open around the clock, and its lighting runs from 18:00 to 22:00, according to Visit Seoul's night guide revised on 7 October 2026. Upstream of Gwanggyo bridge, the Digital Canvas wall plays eight-minute shows every 30 minutes from 19:00 to 21:00 in October and November, and does not run from December to February, per the stream's operator; that page is undated.

If you would rather keep going east, Dongdaemun Design Plaza is open until 20:00, 37 m from Exit 1 of Dongdaemun History and Culture Park station.

Getting there and back

Three stations carry the Euljiro name. Euljiro 1-ga is on Line 2. Euljiro 3-ga is on Lines 2 and 3. Euljiro 4-ga is on Lines 2 and 5. For Nogari Alley, use Euljiro 3-ga. A subway ride costs ₩1,550 with a transport card or ₩1,650 with a single-journey ticket, the adult fares Seoul has charged since 28 June 2025.

Do not rely on a last-train time from a blog, including ours. Seoul Metro's own timetable page for Euljiro 3-ga is undated and carries an old notice that times are being updated, so we have not printed it. Check the last train in your map app before your second round; our guide to using Naver Map in English shows where. Seoul runs 14 late-night bus routes from 23:00 to 06:00 at ₩2,500 by card, but the official list gives only end points, so we cannot tell you which ones pass Euljiro.

What to skip

  • An afternoon visit for the atmosphere. The atmosphere is people working. Come at dusk instead.
  • Sunday daytime. Sewoon Plaza and Bangsan Market are closed.
  • Planning a night walk on the Sewoon deck. The arcade closes at 19:00 and the walkway is due to come down in stages.
  • The underground walkway as a sight. It is a dry corridor between stations, useful in rain and nothing more.
  • The Digital Canvas after November. It does not run from December to February.
  • Fitting Euljiro into a day that is already full. It is an evening, not a stop. If you have three days in Seoul, give it the night you have nothing else planned.
