One Night in Seoul, Alone: Where to Stay and What to Cut
A night and a day is not much time. The whole trick is removing journeys, not adding sights.

Start with the answer
The question this guide answers is the one people actually ask: I have one night in Seoul, on my own, where should I stay?
On the axis running from Jongno to Euljiro. Not Hongdae, not Gangnam.
The reasoning is arithmetic rather than taste. One night gives you about a day and a half of usable time, and alone there is nobody to share the luggage or hold a place in a queue. A solo overnight is won or lost on how many journeys you remove, not on how much you manage to see.
Every figure below was checked on 28 September 2026. What we could not confirm is listed at the end rather than filled in with something plausible.
Why Jongno and Euljiro
Book Hongdae or Gangnam for a one-nighter and you will spend the trip on trains. Our neighbourhood guide works through all seven areas at length.
The case for this axis is the stations, not the atmosphere.
- Euljiro 3-ga is on Lines 2 and 3
- Euljiro 4-ga is on Lines 2 and 5
- Euljiro 1-ga is on Line 2
- Jongno 5-ga is on Line 1
Base yourself inside that and Lines 1, 2, 3 and 5 are all direct. Travelling alone, one transfer costs more than it looks on a map.
It also puts dinner and your bed within walking distance of each other, which is the part that matters at 23:00. The taxi table further down is why.
Luggage comes before check-in
The real bottleneck on a solo overnight is check-in time. You arrive in the early afternoon, check-in is in the evening, and the gap gets spent towing a suitcase around. If you are landing at dawn rather than arriving mid-afternoon, the 5am guide covers that window instead.

Staffed storage, T-Luggage
- Seoul Station, Line 1, B1, toward Exit 1
- 09:00 to 22:00, no closing days, published for all six branches rather than station by station
- Four-hour base, weekday then weekend: S up to 20in ₩3,000 then ₩4,000 · M 20 to 23in ₩4,000 then ₩6,000 · L 23 to 27in ₩6,000 then ₩9,000 · XL over 27in ₩9,000 then ₩13,000
- Extra hour ₩1,000, weekday and weekend alike
- Six stations only: Seoul, Hongik Univ., Jamsil, Myeongdong, Gimpo Airport, Jongno 3-ga
Lockers, T-Locker
- Four-hour base, weekday then weekend: small ₩2,200 then ₩3,100 · medium ₩3,300 then ₩4,600 · large ₩4,400 then ₩6,100
- Extra hour ₩500, ₩800 or ₩1,000 by size
- Operating hours 05:00 to 24:00
- 273 stations, 336 sites, 5,557 cells
The part to notice. T-Locker is not open around the clock. It closes at midnight. If you are on an early train or a first subway the next morning, do not leave a bag in a locker overnight, because you will not be able to get it out.
A one-nighter is usually a weekend, so read the weekend column. Budgeting from the weekday numbers will leave you short.
The fare arithmetic
- Subway base fare by card, up to 10 km: ₩1,550
- Single-journey ticket ₩1,650 plus a ₩500 deposit you get back
- City bus by card ₩1,500, though a small class of differential-fare circular and branch routes is ₩1,400
Short-term Climate Card passes run ₩5,000 for one day, ₩8,000 for two, ₩10,000 for three, ₩15,000 for five and ₩20,000 for seven. There is a separate youth seven-day pass at ₩13,000.
At ₩1,550 a ride, a day pass wins from the fourth ride. Three or fewer and tapping is cheaper.
For a one-nighter there is a trap.
The usage period begins on the day you charge it, and advance charging is not possible. A pass runs from the first train at 04:00 on the start day to the last train on the end day, which is normally around 04:00 the following morning.
Charge a one-day pass on Saturday and it expires with Saturday's last train. You buy another on Sunday. Two of those is ₩10,000, and the two-day pass is ₩8,000.
For one night, buy the two-day pass rather than two one-days.
- Covered: Seoul subway, and Seoul-licensed city and village buses
- Excluded: Sinbundang Line, GTX, express buses and airport buses, subway outside Seoul, and buses licensed elsewhere
- Ttareungi and the Hangang buses are not included. The city's own page says so in as many words, printed alongside the prices
- The Gyeonggi cities came out of scope on 1 September 2026 — Gimpo, Goyang, Gwacheon, Guri, Seongnam, Hanam and Namyangju. It is a Seoul-only pass now
- At Incheon Airport you may alight but not board.
This is the change worth catching. Ttareungi used to ride along with the pass and no longer does, so a bike is now a separate purchase: ₩1,000 for one hour, ₩2,000 for two and ₩3,000 for three, then ₩200 per five minutes over. Non-members can buy only the day ticket. The minimum age is 13, and under-13s can ride only on a family ticket bought by a parent.
One note on names. On 1 September 2026 Seoul launched a new integrated product built on the national Modu Card. That one is a rebate scheme for Seoul residents and is not what a visitor buys. The short-term passes above continue unchanged, according to the city's own changeover FAQ.

Day one, arriving in the afternoon
Written for a Saturday afternoon arrival.
14:00, Seoul Station, bag first
Leave it at the rates above and walk out with your hands free.
15:00, Jongno 3-ga and Sewoon Sangga
- 09:00 to 19:00, closed Sundays and public holidays, and hours vary by shop, Saturdays included
- Jongno 3-ga Exit 12, 279 m
The Sunday closure is the whole point. On a Saturday-to-Sunday trip this belongs on day one. Leave it for the second morning and you will find it shut.
17:00, Cheonggyecheon
- Open 24 hours, seven days a week. Access can be restricted in rain.
The least demanding thing in central Seoul to do on your own. No ticket, no booking, nobody to go with. There are 39 emergency ladders along the walkway, which tells you what the rain restriction is really about: the path floods.
18:30, dinner
The lanes off Exit 3 at Euljiro 3-ga are the evening end of this axis. Gwangjang Market's food alley is the other option, open 09:00 to 23:00 all year.
20:00, check in
That this is a walk and not a ride is the entire argument for staying on this axis.
Day two is where the trip is won
On a one-nighter the second morning is effectively a third of the whole trip. Sleep in and you have had a day out rather than a night away.
Before 06:30, the early-bird discount
From the start of service until 06:30, a first boarding paid by transit card takes 20% off the base fare, except where you are transferring in from another mode. (Seoul Metro)
Twenty per cent off the ₩1,550 base leaves ₩1,240 by our arithmetic. The money is trivial. Getting yourself out of the door early is not, and that is the actual return on it.
Note the exclusion. It has to be your first boarding. Transfer in from a bus and the discount is gone.
07:00, Cheonggyecheon or a bike
Empty at that hour, which is the best time of day to be somewhere alone.
09:00 sharp, Gyeongbokgung

- September and October 09:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:00
- Closed Tuesdays
- ₩3,000 adult
- Free in conforming hanbok
- Free on the last Wednesday of the month
- Guard changing ceremony 10:00 and 14:00, not on closed days
Go in at 09:00, watch the 10:00 changing, leave. Arrive after 11:00 and the same ground takes twice as long to cover.
The palace's own website is showing the wrong hours. Its sidebar still carries the June to August times, 09:00 to 18:30 with last entry 17:30, and the English site repeats them. The hours table further down the same page is the correct one.
The terrace at Geunjeongjeon is closed to visitors until 31 October 2026, to protect the stonework.
Three October dates to know. The palaces open on Monday 5 October for the substitute holiday and then close entirely on Tuesday 6 October. And from 29 October to 15 November 2026 the four palaces, Jongmyo and the royal tombs are free, so the ₩3,000 above does not apply in that window.
This has now ended. The autumn 2026 night opening ran 2 September to 2 October 2026, 19:00 to 21:30 with last entry 20:30, ₩3,000, with no Mondays or Tuesdays. The final night was Friday 2 October 2026. We checked the Korea Heritage Service notice board again on 6 October 2026 and no further Gyeongbokgung night opening has been announced for 2026.
What is open after dark instead. Deoksugung and Changgyeonggung both run to 21:00 all year with last entry at 20:00, and neither needs a special session. There is also one dated thing coming: a night programme called Donggwol Dongnak runs at Changdeokgung and Changgyeonggung from 10 to 15 November 2026, 17:30 to 21:00, by advance reservation. The Heritage Service has published the dates and the enquiry line and nothing else — booking details were still unannounced when we checked on 6 October 2026. On those six days Changgyeonggung's ordinary night viewing stops, and the daytime visit closes at 17:30 with last entry 16:30.
11:30, Gwangjang Market

- Main market 09:00 to 18:00, closed Sundays
- Food alley 09:00 to 23:00, open all year
- Vintage arcade 10:00 to 19:00, also closed Sundays
- Jongno 5-ga Exit 8, 62 m
On a Sunday the main market is closed and only the food alley is open. On a Saturday-to-Sunday trip this is the commonest way to lose the second morning.
It is a market of thousands of independent stalls, and Jongno-gu's own page says only that closing days vary by shop, and lists no hours at all. The hours above are the city tourism office's.
13:00, collect the bag
T-Luggage closes at 22:00 and T-Locker at midnight.

What to cut
This is the part worth reading twice. One night is a subtractive itinerary, not an additive one.
1. Cut the Changdeokgung Secret Garden
- Closed Mondays
- ₩3,000 for the palace plus ₩5,000 for the garden, and the palace ticket is compulsory to enter the garden
- Guided access only, 100 people per session, 50 booked online and 50 sold at the gate
- Online booking opens six days ahead at 10:00 and closes the day before; gate sales from 09:00 on the day
- Ongnyucheon is closed for restoration until further notice
- Over-65s pay the ₩5,000 for the garden. The usual senior exemption does not reach it
Unless you booked six days ago, you are gambling the entire second morning on a queue for 50 places. That is not a bet worth placing on a trip this short.
From 7 October 2026 the palace buildings at Changdeokgung are free every Wednesday. The Secret Garden is not.
2. Cut the second palace

Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung on the same day is a common plan and you will see neither of them properly. Pick one.
3. Do not go to DDP at night
DDP runs 10:00 to 20:00 and closes only on 1 January, Seollal and Chuseok. There is no weekly closing day. Turn up in the evening and the inside is already shut. Put it in daylight or leave it out. The general information desk runs to 21:00, which is the desk's hours and not the building's.
4. Cut a Hongdae or Gangnam bed
For one night specifically. Stay several days and the calculation changes completely, and somewhere like Seongsu starts to be worth the ride. On a day and a half, two transfers in each direction is simply loss.
5. Price the hanbok before you commit to it
Hanbok gets you into Gyeongbokgung free, which saves ₩3,000. If the rental costs more than ₩3,000 you are not saving an entrance fee, you are buying photographs. That is a perfectly good thing to buy. Just go in knowing that renting, changing and walking there will take the morning.
Four things that are harder alone
Getting back late
After the trains stop there are the Owl buses: 14 routes, 140 vehicles, 23:00 to 06:00, ₩2,500. Cash is the same ₩2,500, but paying cash forfeits the transfer discount. N30, Gangil-dong to Seoul Station, is the only route terminating at Seoul Station, running 23:10 to 03:50.
Taxi surcharges
This is what quietly breaks a solo budget. A medium taxi starts at ₩4,800 for 1.6 km by day, then ₩100 per 131 m or per 30 seconds. At night it changes:
- 22:00 to 23:00 and 02:00 to 04:00, base ₩5,800, a 20% surcharge, then ₩120 per 131 m or per 30 seconds
- 23:00 to 02:00, base ₩6,700, a 40% surcharge, then ₩140 per 131 m or per 30 seconds
- Leaving the Seoul city boundary adds 20%, applied automatically
- Combined surcharges cap at 60%
The worst window is 23:00 to 02:00. Staying within walking distance of dinner is a budget instruction, not a romantic one.
Eating alone
The food alley running to 23:00 all year is genuinely useful on your own. Later hours mean less competition for a seat.
Noise
Choosing a dorm or a capsule, check whether quiet hours are actually enforced before you compare prices. That is what reviews of these places really turn on.

If you’re staying nearby
Sunday Morning
- Sunday Morning is a capsule hotel in Jongno-gu, a short walk from Gwanghwamun, on the axis this guide recommends.
- Check-in is self-service around the clock, there is a female-only floor, and lockers are free.
- Capsules start at ₩49,000.
